Lift the flaps to reveal the hidden side to our world only perceptible through smell.

Nose Knows : Wild Ways Animals Smell the World is brilliant, just brilliant. Nose Knows is a beautifully illustrated, hardback chapter book that opens the reader to the world of senses across the animal kingdom from mammals to sealife to insects. The book is divided into seven main chapters. One of our favourite chapters was ‘Stink to impress’. Each page starts with a provocative title linked to the subject matter. A particular favourite for my younger co reader was ‘A nose for dinner’, all about sharks hunting.

The subject matter is then explained in a paragraph with accessible comparisons without compromising the use of the correct scientific language from ‘sensilla’ to ‘procerebrum’ to ‘olfactory membranes’. The accompanying illustrations also have flaps where more detailed illustrations and information can be found. Emmanuelle Figueras cleverly shifts from a storytelling or audience participation voice to an information voice giving each page an inviting sense of rhythm and timbre.

We loved looking at a selection of animals each night and learning more about the fascinating world of their vital senses and, indeed, discussing how we should try and use all of ours more often. As a teacher, this book is brilliant for any classroom. Children in all stages can access this book, and for a classroom, it provides a great model for this style of text and use of language. Claire De Gastold’s illustrations are beautiful, clear and informative.
